JCRC STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE SEPARATION OF CHILDREN FROM MIGRANT FAMILIES AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER

Declaración de JCRC que condena energicamente la politica de la presente administracion, de separar a los niños de sus familias migrantes en la frontera sur de los Estados Unidos.

The Jewish Community Relations Council of El Paso and Southern New Mexico (JCRC-EPSNM) strongly condemns the Administration’s policy of separating children from their migrant families at the southern border of the United States. This policy is cruel and inhumane, and only adds to the suffering of these families, who are often fleeing violence and oppression in their home countries. Children are particularly likely to suffer emotionally and psychologically from separation from their parents. And for parents there is no worse nightmare than being separated from their children and not knowing where their children are, or whether they are safe.

The Administration’s policy of separating families at the southern border is specifically meant to be punitive, and to deter refugees - both economic and political - from seeking asylum and protection here. As members of a community with a painful history of families being separated by governmental authority and who also know the pain of being refused entry into the US, it is personally very difficult for us to see individuals fleeing persecution punished for seeking refuge in our own country.

The United States is a nation of immigrants and how we treat immigrants, even those who come to this country as migrants and/or asylum-seekers without documentation, should reflect our values of respect and fair treatment for all human beings. We call on the Administration and Congress to put an immediate end to the policy of separating families when they present themselves or are apprehended at the border.

Judaism teaches that: "You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt." Exodus 22:20. Thus, Jewish organizations, including CRCs, have a long history of active engagement in supporting immigrants and refugees.  Consistent with the teachings of our faith and our corresponding history, JCRC-EPSNM strongly condemns the Administration’s policy of separating children from their migrant families at the southern border and calls for immediate cessation of this cruel and inhumane policy.

El Consejo de Relaciones Comunitarias judías de El Paso y el sur de Nuevo México (JCRC-EPSNM) condena enérgicamente la política de la presente administración, de separar a los niños de sus familias migrantes en la frontera sur de los Estados Unidos. Esta política es cruel e inhumana, y sólo se suma al sufrimiento de estas familias, que a menudo huyen de la violencia y la opresión en sus países de origen. Es muy probable que los niños sufran emocional y psicológicamente con la separación de sus padres. Y para los padres no hay peor pesadilla que estar separados de sus hijos y no saber dónde están, o si están seguros.

La política de la presente administración de separar a las familias en la frontera sur está específicamente destinada a ser punitiva, e igualmente sirve para disuadir a los refugiados que por razones económicas o políticas buscan aquí asilo y protección.

Nosotros, como miembros de una comunidad con una larga y dolora historia de familias separadas por la autoridad gubernamental y quienes también hemos conocido el dolor de ser rechazados por querer entrar en los Estados Unidos de América, nos es muy difícil ver a todos aquellos individuos que huyen de la persecución y son castigados por buscar refugio en nuestro propio país.

Estados Unidos es una nación de inmigrantes y cómo tal, es menester que el trato a migrantes, inmigrantes e indocumentados, y todo solicitante de asilo, debe reflejar nuestros valores de respeto y trato justo para todos los seres humanos. Pedimos a la presente administración y al Congreso que pongan fin de inmediato a la política de separar a las familias, cuando estas se encuentren o sean aprehendidos en la frontera.

El judaísmo enseña que: "no le harás daño a un extraño ni lo oprimirás, porque fuiste extraños en la tierra de Egipto." Éxodo 22:20. Así, las organizaciones judías, incluyendo las CRCs, tienen una larga historia de compromiso activo en el apoyo a los inmigrantes y refugiados. Congruente y consistente con las enseñanzas de nuestra fe y nuestra historia, JCRC-EPSNM condena enérgicamente la política de la presente administración de separar a los niños de sus familias migrantes en la frontera sur, y pide el cese inmediato de esta cruel e inhumana política.
